Earlier on a few occasions in Guangzhou, Stephen CHOW and Eric TSANG expressed their ideas on promoting further collaborations between the filmmakers and industry players in Hong Kong, Guangdong and Guangzhou City. TSANG even put forward a comprehensive proposal to the Guangzhou Government to build a studio city in Nansha, Guangzhou, or in Zhengcheng as an alternative. He pointed out that transportation is not very convenient in Hengdian. It took over 2 hours' road traffic to go from Zhejiang Airport to Hengdian World Studios, the very popular filming location for production crew from Hong Kong. At the peak time, there could be as many as 60 teams of crew filming at Hengdian World Studios, which accounting for a tax contribution of RMB 1 billion out of its RMB 5.5 billion total revenue last year.
Nansha, the newly developed area for Hong Kong-Guangdong collaborations, covers 800 km2 of land coming to 8/10 of the size of Hong Kong. It has idle lands that make it a very ideal site for a newer and better studio compatible with the Hengdian World Studios. It also has a well-developed transportation network that makes travelling to or from Hong Kong a very convenient one-hour trip by land or by sea. With such advantages it will hopefully draw Hong Kong crew from Hengdian to the closer Nansha, enhancing collaborations between Hong Kong and Guangzhou and making Nansha the"Hollywood studio city in the south of China".
Stephen CHOW said at another occasion his feelings towards the needs for Guangdong and Hong Kong to utterly join force in film production and development in all courses. Presently the collaborations are mainly seen in the production and distribution. He suggested that there should be more partnerships in the strategic level to achieve more significant development and success.
CHOW and TSANG revealed their proposals at the recent Guangdong Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and Guangzhou Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference respectively. TSANG has been a member of the Guangdong CPPCC for 3 years while CHOW is newly nominated this year as Guangdong CPPCC member. Another Hong Kong actor who joined Guangdong CPPCC is Ken TONG, who is in his second term of service in the Conference.
