Wilson Yip's "Ip Man 2" brings Labor Day surprises on May 1st golden week in Mainland China. Released precisely at 7:30pm on April 29, "Ip Man 2" struck 106 million RMB in a blazing start as of May 2 against no competition, easily powering past its predecessor's last year box office.
Not only did "Ip Man 2" claim an encouraging 9.28 million RMB on the opening day, the martial arts sequel has also opened the door to a potentially lucrative future Labor Day schedule. Industry experts had expected to see it soar past 90 million RMB in a week, but "Ip Man 2" managed to push through just a tad more on the last day of the long Labor Day weekend, lifting its tally to 128 million in a week's time.
Guangdong Southern New Line Cinema Circuit, one of the four largest mainland cinema operators, has announced that "Ip Man 2" rocketed to the top of the national box office rank with 12.23 million RMB (one-tenth of the national box office share) as of May 2. Southern New Line Cinema Circuit, Dadi Cinema Circuit and Jinyizhujiang Movie Circuit in Guangdong altogether recorded 31 million RMB at box office in the same period. Predictably to surpass 45 million RMB in Guangdong and break through 200 million RMB nationwide, "Ip Man 2" is yet another testament to the competitive edge of Hong Kong productions in the Guangdong market.
