US movie studio Lionsgate has formed a new joint venture with private investment group Saban Capital to expand its television arm Tiger Gate Entertainment across Asia.
Headquartered in Hong Kong, Tiger Gate is due to launch two channels in Hong Kong and Singapore on April 28, followed by other Asian markets such as Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei later this year.
The two channels are Thrill, a horror and thriller channel, and Kix, an action channel, which have been operating in Indonesia since August 2009.
Both channels showcase a mix of Asian blockbuster films and hit TV series as well as Hollywood titles from the vast library of Lionsgate. The programmes are presented with the original language tracks with subtitles in English and other local Asian languages.
Tiger Gate plans to launch new channels and acquire existing media assets in the region. Also in the pipeline are plans for producing its own local feature film and television content to feed its channels.
The company will continue to be run by William Pfeiffer, former head of Celestial Pictures, also a Hong Kong-based operator of Asian motion picture and television distribution, and Lionsgate International executive Paul Presburger, who set up the company with Lionsgate in 2008.
