The tension of Yanggaw, which tells the tale of a young woman named Amor who returns how to her family with an illness, is an effective family drama and a chilling horror film rolled into one. What elevates the film above genre fare is the director's focus on the family, and the emotional toll it takes when an aswang (a night monster that preys on human blood and organs) is discovered. By keeping it realistic without silly special effects and fake-looking props, Somes manages to heighten the realism as well as the scare factor.
